MONT, DOUGLAS
Douglas Mont's work is colourful and has organic qualities, there are no straight angles, he does not follow furniture norms or rules. Douglas Mont has studied at the Camondo School of Design (ex / Starck) and though exploring different materials and moulding techniques he eventually favoured working with plastic.
The rotomolding technology has given him reality to his dreams of shapes. Douglas' colourful shapes are inviting to caress, the seater bringing the sculptural form to life. Douglas' furniture has anthropomorphic qualities. Douglas describes himself has a re-creator instead of a creator, because his creations could have been made 40 years before ( but they haven't!).
Like one of his mentors, the design "guru" Marc Newson, Douglas Mont's design style can be classified in the retro-futurisc design movement.
We asked Douglas to tell us more:
How would you describe your design style?
I definitely describe myself as a retrofuturist, by using old technology ( but still good ), or sometimes as an anthropomorphical designer.
What inspired you to design the Trek Coffee Table?
In this case, the shape of the table gives the name, just take a look at the star trek logo. The table looks like that from the top.
Where or what do you draw inspiration from?
I took inspiration in the past, and then I try to imagine what my future will be like.... sex is also a good thing to think about when you are designing.
Who is your favourite designer or designers?
I really love Marc Newson ( he is the retrofuturistic designer and the pod guru ). Patrick Norguet, because he 's a good friend. Jean Marie Massaud, because he's right.
